There are five basic methods of ecommerce web hosting:
- In-house
- Shared
- Co-located (CoLo)
- Dedicated
- Managed Dedicated
Which one you choose will depend on the skills of your staff and the special needs of your business.
In-house ecommerce web hosting means that you own all the hardware and software, provide the physical location, air conditioning, and power, and lease a high-speed Internet connection to your site. Unless your site is already close to a major Internet ‘backbone’, the high-speed ‘pipe’ may be very expensive. It also means employing staff to maintain the ecommerce web hosting solution. Maintenance includes tasks such as providing security, performance monitoring, making back-ups, and reacting to hardware failures. Your staff will also need to know how to limit damage from “hackers” and how to respond to malicious attacks. In-house hosting is generally suitable only for very large ecommerce sites, and is very rarely used.
Co-location (CoLo) web hosting means that you place a server that you own in a facility maintained by a 3rd party who provides the necessary Internet connection, air conditioning, and power for running your server, usually alongside servers belonging to many other customers. The main benefits of this type of plan are that the costs are lower and you have control over the choice of hardware. Disadvantages may include not having physical access to the server, although that should not be necessary.
Shared web hosting is where one physical server is shared amongst different users, and the hardware is provided by a 3rd party. The sharing is usually implemented by means of virtualization software, which allows several copies of an operating system (or sometimes even different operating systems, although most shared ecommerce web hosting solutions will be limited to a single type of OS) to run on the same machine. More than one website will be located on a single host’s server and the Internet connection will be shared by all the users. This is usually an excellent low-cost solution for small to medium ecommerce sites. This is most common type of hosting service. It is convenient for most smaller sites simply because it removes most of the hassle of running and maintaining a website. If you get your shared hosting from a large company, your hosting arrangement can grow seamlessly as your needs grow. Many companies who provide shared solutions also provide dedicated and managed dedicated solutions.
Dedicated ecommerce web hosting is similar to CoLo, except that somebody else provides the hardware, and you just lease everything. It can be more convenient than a shared solution since you get exclusive use of the server, software, and a separate Internet connection. You get to specify the type of operating system used as well as any other software. Dedicated ecommerce web hosting works well for a website which gets massive traffic and requires high reliability and bandwidth. Dedicated solutions are also available as managed solutions, where the company that leases the hardware also handles the normal maintenance. Usually the managed solutions are cheaper than in-house systems.
